Hunter wins Am, Completes Career Grand Slam
Congratulations to Jeff Hunter (Whitewater GC) for winning the 2024 Teleco District Amateur Championship. Jeff began the final round at Whitewater Golf Club with a four-shot lead over Jeremy Kirk (Fort William CC) and Cody Bruchkowski (Fort William CC), thanks to stellar rounds of 70 at the Chapples and Strathcona Golf Clubs. Although Jeremy quickly cut the deficit to two strokes with birdies on the first and third holes, Jeff's short game proved unshakable. He answered with a remarkable twenty-yard pitch-in birdie on the par-3 fifth hole and added another birdie on the par-5 seventh hole after an impressive up-and-down from the greenside bunker. A series of clutch par-saving pitches on the back nine secured his victory at 212 (-2). Jeremy finished as runner-up for a second consecutive year, continuing his impressive streak after wins in both 2021 and 2022. Kevin Jackson (Whitewater GC) rounded out the podium, while Robert Atatise (Whitewater GC) and Barry Caland (Fort William CC) shared fourth place.
Jeff's victory makes him just the eleventh golfer to complete the career grand slam—winning the District Open, Strathcona Invitational, and District Amateur at least once. He joins Jeremy Kirk (2023), Robert Cumming (2007), Barry Caland (2002), Bill Seagris (2001), Tony Stokaluk (1991), Trevor Jones (1985), Frank Edmonds (1984), Don Stokaluk (1977), Bill Gordon (1963), and Bob Devine (1950) as the only grand slam winners.
In the second flight, Samuel Orr (Fort William CC), Jordan Potter (Fort William CC), and Ed Atwill (Whitewater GC) tied at 225 to share first place and sixth overall.
In third flight, Ashley Nate (Whitewater GC) edged out Jason Humphrey (Strathcona GC) by one shot and Scott Glomba (Centennial Pines GC) by two at 233.
Phil Blaze (Strathcona GC) dominated the fourth flight with a wire-to-wire win, finishing ten strokes ahead at 235. Tyson Bouchard (Fort William CC) and Decio Lopes (Whitewater GC) rounded out the flight's the top three.
