Moro Completes Comeback to Win District Open

Congratulations to Jack Moro (Whitewater GC) for winning the 2024 AON District Open. Jack started the final round four strokes behind Nathan Lepore (Centennial Pines GC), who shot an impressive opening round score of 69 at Fort William CC. However, an eagle-3 on Whitewater’s par-five third hole ignited Jack’s comeback. Jack finished the event at 144, shooting scores of 73 and 71.

Several players made impressive moves on Sunday, including Matthew Cho-Chu (Fort William CC), who birdied three of his first four holes; Jeremy Kirk (Fort William CC), who made four birdies on his opening nine holes; Evan DeGrazia (Chapples GC), who eagled the par-five twelfth hole to pull within two strokes of the lead; and Jeff Hunter (Whitewater GC), who shot a final-round 70 to move into fourth place.

Playing the last hole with a three-shot lead over Nathan and Evan, Jack hit his drive into a penalty area, which forced him to take a penalty stroke, lay up, and save par from outside of one hundred yards. At the same time, Nathan hit the eighteenth green in two shots, setting up a twenty-foot eagle putt. With a potential three-shot swing in play, Jack stepped up and knocked his wedge shot to within five feet. After Nathan’s eagle putt slid by, Jack calmly tapped in for par and the two-shot victory.

Both Jack and Nathan have earned exemptions into the 2024 Manitoba Men’s Amateur Championship as the two lowest-finishing amateurs.

In the second flight, Ed Atwill (Whitewater GC) and Matthew Cho-Chu (Fort William CC) shared first prize with a two-day total of 150. Both players birdied their final hole of the tournament to preserve the tie. Scott Wilke (Strathcona GC) and Casey Niemi (Whitewater GC) finished in third, both shooting 72 in the final round.

Rob Campbell (Fort William CC) led wire-to-wire to win the third flight by two strokes over Richard Crupi (Whitewater GC) at 159. Hank Wilke (Strathcona GC) rounded out the top three.

In the fourth flight, first-time competitor Alex Erwin (Fort William CC) held off Tyson Bouchard (Fort William CC) to win by three strokes. Decio Lopes (Whitewater GC) finished in third.
